Is Loft Insulation in Bristol and the South West free?

Grants are still available for Loft Insulation Bristol and the West Country.

Free loft insulation is possible through The Great British Insulation Scheme. If you want Loft Insulation alone, it tends to favour smaller properties. Larger properties would probably need to make a contribution.

The Great British Insulation Scheme started as a single insulation measure grant scheme.

However, from 15/5/25, you can get Loft Insulation as a secondary measure, for example, you could have both loft insulation and cavity wall insulation together, which would be totally free.

The Great British Insulation Scheme’s qualification rules are exactly the same for each type of insulation.

How is Loft Insulation in Bristol Funded?

FAQs Cavity Wall Insulation

It’s all about reducing Carbon Emissions.

The Gas and Electricity companies have a Legal Obligation to reduce Carbon Emissions.

This is known as the Energy Company’s Obligation, ECO for short.

Under this scheme, gas and electricity companies are required to take action to help lower carbon emissions.

We all contribute to this initiative through our fuel bills, as part of what’s called the “green levy” – 6% of gas bills and 11% of electricity bills go towards this fund.

The energy companies then use this money to fund ECO grants, including schemes like The Great British Insulation Scheme.

So, while the insulation itself may seem free, we’re indirectly funding it through our energy bills, as is often the case.

Is my Loft suitable for insulating?

Bats in the loft

We carry out a thorough survey of the loft space to ascertain its suitability.

Any findings or concerns are then discussed with the customer.

These could include, but are not limited to, damp, ceiling cracks, high amp cables, downlighters, wasp nests, evidence of rodents, condensation, etc.

If Bats are present, you cannot have your loft insulated – they are a protected species, and must not be disturbed. However, the loft can be insulated during their “away period”.

How is Loft insulation installed?

We don’t use the “itchy stuff” any more.

We use what can be described as a “quilt” which the manufacturers state “you could comfortably sleep on”. It is manufactured by Knauf.

The rolls are brought into the house in “poly bags” and taken into the loft, where the insulation is removed from the bags.

The first layer of free loft insulation is then laid between the joists. A second layer is then laid at right angles to the first layer, that is, across the joists.

The top layer of insulation prevents heat from escaping from the gaps between the joists in the bottom layer.

The recommended depth of loft insulation is 300mm (12 inches).

Our technicians will then ensure that there is sufficient ventilation within the loft space.

Each loft will have its own set of circumstances, such as downlighters, electricity cables, etc. These would have been noted during the initial survey and discussed with the customer.

An average semi-detached house would take less than 2 hours to insulate. The empty bags are removed, and no mess to be seen.

All our technicians are fully insured.

Rafter Loft insulation

We do not install “rafter” insulation. There are 2 main reasons for this.

Firstly, we just don’t see the point of it. Yes, it stops the heat from leaving the house, but it does not stop the heat from leaving the “living space” below. It only serves to heat the loft space.

However, our second reason is somewhat scary. Rafter insulation often takes the form of “foam sprayed insulation”, and this forms a bond with the roof. I had read horror stories online where a problem had arisen with a tile letting in water. Owing to the bond formed by the foam insulation, the whole roof had to be removed.

In August 2016, we had a call from a customer in Whitchurch, Cardiff, where that exact same situation had arisen. The customer had to have the roof replaced at a cost of £7,000.

Loft Insulation is supposed to save you money, not cost you £1,000’s.
