One bright spark in the Government suggested that they call it “Insulate Britain”. One slightly brighter spark then pointed out that “Insulate Britain” was the group that superglued themselves to the roads of London.
And so, the Great British Insulation Scheme was cooked up instead.
So, what does The Great British Insulation Scheme offer in Bristol?
In fact, all of the measures listed below are available, but you can only have 1 measure installed under the scheme. This changed on 15/5/25 – you can now have Free Cavity Wall Insulation with free loft insulation.
There are some exceptions where Heating Controls can be added as a second measure, and Loft Insulation with Cavity Wall Insulation.
Qualifying Insulation Measures
- Free Cavity Wall Insulation – IF YOU QUALIFY, IT WILL BE FREE!
- Loft Insulation – If you are having it with Cavity Wall Insulation, it will always be free. However, by itself, it will probably require a contribution
- External Wall Insulation – it will require a contribution
- Internal Wall Insulation – it will require a contribution
- Pitched Roof Insulation – Not offered by us under the Great British Insulation Scheme, but potentially under ECO4
- Flat Roof Insulation – Not offered by us under the Great British Insulation Scheme, but potentially under ECO4
- Under Floor Insulation – Not offered by us under the Great British Insulation Scheme, but potentially under ECO4
- Solid Floor Insulation – Not offered by us under the Great British Insulation Scheme, but potentially under ECO4
- Park Home Insulation – Not offered by us under the Great British Insulation Scheme, but potentially under ECO4
- Room-in-Roof Insulation – Not offered by us under the Great British Insulation Scheme, but potentially under ECO4
- Heating Controls (under certain circumstances)
How do you qualify for a Great British Insulation Scheme grant in Bristol?
There are 2 routes to qualifying for a Great British Insulation Scheme grant.
- The General Group.
- The “low-income” Group.
The General Group qualification for a grant.
- Is your Council Tax Banding A to D in England (or in Wales, A, B, C, D or E)? You can find your Council Tax Banding on Gov.Uk, and
- Is your EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) rating a D, E, F or G? You can find your EPC on the EPC Register.
If you can say yes to both of those questions, you qualify. Don’t panic if your home does not have an EPC – we can sort that out for you.
Eligible residents can apply for cavity wall insulation Bristol regardless of income.
NB. Under the General Group, private tenants will not be offered Cavity Wall Insulation or Loft Insulation. They will need to qualify under the Low Income Group, i.e. be in receipt of a qualifying benefit.

Private Tenants. Rented properties with F & G EPC rating must have one of the following
- A relevant exemption or
- No legal requirement for an EPC (e.g. a listed building) or
- A relevant tenancy agreement that does not require an EPC
1. General Group. Grants for tenants will not be offered for Loft Insulation or Cavity Wall Insulation – all other insulations are good to do.
2. The Low Income Group – This group will not be offered heating controls; all other insulations are good to do.
Will the Great British Insulation Scheme in Bristol cover the full cost of the work carried out?
The value of the grant is calculated using the property’s total floor area and its Energy Performance Rating (EPC). So, it is not a fixed amount.
It is extremely unlikely that Cavity Wall Insulation would require a contribution. In any event, you would be made aware that there would be a contribution before any chargeable work was carried out.
Don’t worry if your property does not have an EPC; we will produce one as part of the required surveys.
